Circa 1890, James C. Lawrence founded his photographic business in Gosport.
Over the next 107 years, James, his sons Louis and Arthur, then grandson David, captured every aspect of life in the town in peace and war including street scenes, weddings and social events, naval vessels visiting the harbour, the military, Royal visits and family portraits. A unique archive which records the great events of the 20th century that were to change Britain through the eyes of one town.
For many years the collection of old photographs lay forgotten amongst the dust and ephemera of a bygone era, waiting to be rediscovered. On this website, the owner of the archive, J.C.Lawrence’s grandson Anthony Lawrence, has published pictures from the first and second exhibitions of the archive 2011:
The Lawrence Collection, “A Century of Gosport in Pictures”
All of the photographs on this website are available as prints from A4 to A2 in size from J.C.Lawrence & Sons on the finest quality Baryta photographic paper. Every print comes with a certificate of authenticity. If you are interested in purchasing a print or licensing an image, please contact us at info@lawrencearchive.com
The photographs on this site are arranged in galleries which will, over time, be added to as different pictures are published. The images from glass plates have immense detail, however, the pictures here are in low resolution and we apologise for the watermarks: measures which are necessary because of those less scrupulous amongst us.
